Terrorism attacks in Turkey 1970-2016
DATA VAN DE DAG - Yesterday in a terrorism attack on the Ataturk Airport in Turkey at least 44 were killed. Terrorism seems to be on the rise there. We gathered the data to give the long term perspective.
The previous hight of terrorism in Turkey was in the early nineties
Yesterday the Global Terrorism Database added the data for 2015. With this data we've created the overview on the number of attacks per year in Turkey since 1970 (top graph).
For the year 2016 we looked up the data on current attacks at Wikipedia. Since Wikipedia doesn't register all the "minor" incidents like GTD, we can't compare the number of attacks. But significant attacks (50) in which people get killed are almost always registered. So we created the chart below in which the number of people killed per year is shown.
Data from 1970 till 2015 is from the GTD. Data for 2016 from Wikipedia, covering only incidents till December 11th.
The current rise in attacks and victims in Turkey is significant, but it's not at the level of the early nineties yet.
Chart at the bottom updated January 1st 2017. Data for 2016 and 2017 based on Wikipedia.
Please read the notes on the data at GTD.

To complete our series on terrorism we created an overview on worldwide terrorism since 1970.
With the updated version of the Global Terrorism Database we've created an interactive worldmap. All attacks with known locations (>150.000) are shown per month.
A map circulated on Twitter with the statement that is showed all car bombings in Baghdad for the last 10 years. It was a viral hoax. We've constructed a map with data for the 10 years between 2006 and 2015 with all known locations and number of attacks in Iraq.
This weekend a terrorism attack in Bagdad killed over 200 people and last week an attack on an airport in Turkey killed over 40. Some media outlets suggested that the attacks might be related to the period of Ramadan. We used data from the Global Terrorism Database to check if there's a significant association to be found in the last 10 years.
